THE WORKPLACE CAN BE A STRESSFUL ENVIRONMENT, even if you love your job and the team you work with. Deadlines, quotas, and performance expectations can quickly fire up conflicts between co-workers, as well as between supervisors and staff. In today's tight economy, people are pressured to perform like never before, often under strained conditions. Due to the fact many are worried about losing their current job, they put up with debilitating interpersonal work relationships that are slowly draining them of their drive, focus and morale. In an attempt to vent workplace frustration, people under stress tend to redirect their upset into their personal lives, and concurrently, conflicts erupt with our family and friends. Harmful coping skills like compulsive drinking, eating, shopping, etc. only make matters worse.

Although managers and supervisors may feel that a stressful workplace environment is something they don't have to address because a) the company can't afford to, b) they don't how to, and/or c) they simply don't care, each one of these excuses is bound to allow workplace conflict and stress to end badly in some way. The negative result of ignoring and/or justifying the status quo can be devastating on multiple levels, personally and financially.

According to mediation expert Dan Dana:

"Workplace conflict incurs a high, but hidden, cost — an expense item that is not in your budget.

"That cost is demonstrable — you can measure the financial cost of conflict in your organization in the next five minutes.

"That cost is reducible — mediation consistently resolves 90% of workplace conflicts successfully.

"When a conflict is not resolved before attorneys become involved, the cost of conflict explodes by at least a factor of ten."
